Lazy Sundays

August 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’m pretty sure that every day for me could be considered to be pretty lazy by most people’s standards. Today, however, is full of pure indolence. We thought we’d be out of town, this weekend, so there weren’t any plans made. I woke up late, made The Fiance go get me breakfast and took a nap within two hours of being awake. The Fiance is out boating. I considered going, but then I learned that TCM is running only Cary Grant movies, today. So far, I’ve watched The Awful Truth, half of The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer (which has one of the funniest screwball comedy scenes toward the end at the nightclub with all the birthdays), Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (made in 1948, when a successful Madison Ave. Mr. Blandings earned $15k a year and a dream house on 50 acres in Connecticut cost $18k) and I’m in the middle of Father Goose (one of my very favorites).

To redeem myself, I do have two loads of laundry currently in progress. I have also paid two bills. Much more is probably expecting too much!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Crap

May 23, 2008 · 2 Comments

I love Indiana Jones. I always have. I’ve fought for his honor when others said James Bond was cooler than he. I scoffed at the idea that Indy, with only a whip and a handgun, could kick ass way harder than the icy Bond with all his gadgets. I even liked the crap TV show that NO ONE liked, The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. It stands to reason that if Harrison Ford in a fedora and leather jacket were to read the phone book with some inflection, I’d rave about its brilliance.

It’s really too bad that the much anticipated fourth installment of the smash hit movie franchise couldn’t live up to that. In fact, if I watched a still image of Indy and a phone book for two hours, it would have been better than the crap I just spent $20 to watch. If you’ve ever watched the movies, you’ll know that there are plenty of scenes not based in reality – the raft out of the airplane scene in Temple of Doom? How about the “Leap of Faith” in The Last Crusade? Totally not believable, but you’re caught up the story and it’s fun and you cut the writers a little slack. After all, legend is part of the hot professor’s charisma, you know? From the very first few action sequences, I knew that this movie was trying to hard to make me believe the unbelievable. I just can’t shake the feeling that no one can be pulled off the back of a motorcycle, then crawl out a car window back onto the motorcycle without the driver completely losing control.

Obviously, I didn’t like the film and could go on and on about the horrible acting, the loose ends that were never tied, and the super shitty un-Indy-like ending. However, I’ll leave you lovely readers with this analogy. We all know about my love of the TV show Friends. The first three Indiana Jones movies rival Friends for my affection. I’d love to know what Rachel and Ross are doing, to know if Chandler and Monica and the twins are doing well in suburbia. At the same time I want to know that, I know that any kind of reunion show would come off like A Very Brady Christmas did – it’s just not right. That’s the feeling of this movie. It was a reunion of some former cast members. Harrison Ford comes off as a pale shadow of the once endearing Docta Jones. Karen Allen is just deplorable. Shia LeBeouf is about as good an actor as he was in Transformers, that is to say, horrible.

Just rewatch the first three and be happy in the knowledge that they are perfect in their wonderfulness. Go on believing that Indy and his dad and Marcus rode off into the Arabian sunset and lived happily ever after – their lives full of adventures that don’t include aliens or human flesh-eating ants. Trust me. Save yourself.

Here’s The Boyfriend’s review: Save yourself some money on this movie. Sit at home, peel back your eyelids, take a spoon and smack yourself right in the pupil. That’s, basically, what this movie is like.

Mish Mash

Some new posts are in the works, I promise. I’m being slow in uploading photos from The Boyfriend’s camera to my computer. It’s fun and exciting and about a new hobby (hopefully this will become a hobby) of ours. Action shots! Sweet! Here’s a preview:

In other news, though, spring is here and I love it. Except for the clothes. Warm weather clothes suck, mostly because there isn’t a lot of bulk to them to hide the fact that I’ve been eating pizza and tacos and ice cream all winter long. I do love being able to wear shoes with no socks, though. Yay for flip flops (even if they are hazardous to one’s health :eyeroll:). I’m going shopping, tonight, for some new clothes (and maybe a pair of shoes). Wish me luck!

Additionally, The Boyfriend is sick. He has one of those nasty summer colds that make you feel like the whole world has turned against you. It’s beautiful outside, the lilacs are blooming, and you can’t enjoy it, much less smell it because your sinuses are so clogged up. I hope he feels better by this weekend.

We watched “No Country for Old Men,” last night. We nearly went to the theater to watch it, which is a big deal because The Boyfriend doesn’t like going to the movies. I really liked it, but maybe I’m dumber than I thought, because I don’t get the ending. Maybe there’s nothing to get, and that’s the point. It made me love Tommy Lee Jones, again, though. Ol’ Anton was a badass, though. I told The Boyfriend that I’d probably have nightmares about him, he was so creepy.

That’s all for now. Yeah, it was boring. Did you expect more?

Right Wrongs?

I watched an interesting movie*, last night, Gone Baby Gone, starring Casey Affleck (directed by his brother), Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman. On the surface, the movie is about two private investigators who are searching for a girl abducted from the Boston area and the resulting upheaval it causes in their lives.

The central theme, though, is about choices. At many points along the storyline, so many of the characters are faced with a choice between right and wrong. There are discussions about the gray areas of right and wrong. Affleck contemplates whether doing a wrong thing for the right reason is a justifiable wrong. Ultimately, it’s the central conflict of the movie. If Jason and I hadn’t been so tired after we finished it, we would have had a great discussion regarding this dilemma.

I ask you…are wrong actions committed with good intentions still wrong, or do those intentions somehow make them right? We have all lied to protect someone else. Does that good intention make up for the questionable act of lying? What about on a grander scale? Is vaccinating a microbial organism into extinction the right thing to do because it saves thousands of other, seemingly more important, organisms? Is waging war against an unjust tyrant justified when that war, ultimately, could save that tyrant’s subjects from torture and terror?

Heady questions for a Thursday morning, but I woke up thinking about the film and the lessons to be taken from it.

*I will warn that this movie may be hard for some people to watch. Parts of it made me pretty uncomfortable, not for what was on the screen, but the terror implied by the subject matter – child abduction.

Snow Day, My Way

February 12, 2008 · 3 Comments

We haven’t had any real snow this winter, and I’ve been perturbed about that. I love snow, when there’s lots of it. A flew flakes here and there just cause people to drive like idiots. Real, measurable snow is something I’ve been looking forward to. Finally! Finally, we got some. During EJ’s first birthday party, last night, snowflakes the size of quarters started falling and the accumulation was quick. This morning, during the 3:30 am trip outside with Guinness, I noticed that the snow had stopped, but freezing rain had started. It was 19 degrees, then, and not likely to get any warmer by the time the 5:00 am commute commenced. So, Jason and I both called in a vacation day. It’s not worth it to risk life and limb.

Here are a few pictures from the 6:45 am trip outside with Guinness. Don’t let that plowed road fool you, the car was covered in about a quarter inch of ice and the road looked to be, as well.

So far, we’ve done a bunch of nothing on our snow day. I watched “Away From Her.” That was good. Then, Jason got his lazy ass out of bed and made me bacon and homemade pancakes. Just like any good boyfriend would do. We watched another movie. Now, he’s playing Grand Theft Auto and I’m on puppy patrol.

Fun times. I just wish it weren’t raining so we could go play in it.
