Banner Love

August 11, 2009 · 5 Comments

Have I told you guys that I’m a letters person? I like the way that letters look. I love looking through fonts to pick the perfect ones. My favorite discovery of the past year is how to use glyphs in Adobe Illustrator. I can’t do anything else in that stupid program, but I can write pretty words. I also love my handwriting and have worked since the second grade to be satisfied with it.

It’s no surprise, then, that when I saw this image on one of my new favorite sites, Moda BakeShop, I was inspired.

15Happy Birthday Banner by Jen Duncan (tutorial)

As soon as I saw this I thought, “That’s a solution to the banner problem!”

See, we are getting married under a tent. This tent will be in the backyard of a home. I’ve been struggling with how to dress up one end of the tent so that there is a nice area defined where the ceremony will take place. The guests will be facing toward a farm field (hopefully without cows), which would be pretty enough, but I felt the need to kind of set off the area as special. Churches lend automatic dramatic backdrops with altars and stained glass and such. While ours will be far from “dramatic” I’m hoping it will at least be sweet and special.

Since I’m not into revealing all the surprises I have up my bridal sleeve, I’m not going to spell it all out, but if you know me and you see that inspiration picture, you’ve probably guessed what I’m doing. Here are some teaser photos to help even more!

In progress zig zag. I love this stitch, almost as much as my new pinking shears. Something about a perfect sawtooth makes me smile. I also love that lit up “Fix” button. It’s one part of my kick-ass sewing machine that helps a rookie like me do a better job on sewing projects. I will never be able to sew on a more manual machine. Please excuse the dust on the shank, there.

In progress with my favorite little flower pins. I need more of these. They are perfect for rotary cutting because they allow your ruler to lay flat, unlike other pins.

Those last two should totally give away the whole project. I’m just excited to have another task to mark as “Complete” on the Monster To Do List! I’m also completely excited to say that this whole project cost me $3.70. All the fabric was from my stash, scraps left over from past projects. The ribbon was the only purchase I needed!

Fit to be Tied

December 8, 2008 · 4 Comments

Being a bewildered, first time bride, I started out my wedding planning at the hugely popular site The Knot. If you’ve ever been in a wedding, you know this place. Your brides sent you links to bridesmaids dresses and flower arrangements and you were forced to create a login to see these pages. I should have known, then, the horror that The Knot inspires. Once I filled out the correct forms, stating when the wedding would approximately be, at what stage I was in the planning process, etc. I learned that, after only 24 hours of engaged bliss, I had already failed to complete 10 items on their prescribed “To Do” list (from hell!). That might be an exageration, but I am sincere when I tell you that I logged on, today…a full two weeks and two days from the proposal to find that I was overdue on 15 items. Seriously!

So, The Knot and I aren’t friends. There are some good ideas in the form of pictures and Real Wedding references. There are good resources, I’m sure, if you live in New York City or any city whose population is larger than my whole state’s. The venue and bridal services registry is nearly nonexistent for my entire state. It may also be a good resource for someone who is highly unorganized and has a hard time remaining on task. However, this is not me. So far, here is a list of what I’ve accomplished:

-set up a bridal notebook
-selected a date – next fall
-selected/contracted a site – outdoor, historic
-selected colors – what else but green for me and brown for The Fiancee? (and you thought the new header was just pretty)
-made out a guest list, trimmed said list, trimmed said list again, stressed out over list, added people at my parents’ request, trimmed said list for (hopefully!) the final time
-selected bridesmaids, reader, program hander-outer
-rough-sketched the reception menu
-contracted a photographer – the awesome Clay Jackson
-selected and bought the pattern for the bridesmaid’s dresses
-completely planned the ceremony and compiled a “Still to Do/Rent” list for it
-designed the Save the Date cards and map to be sent with the invitation – see the awesome maps at SnappyMap for where I got my inspiration
-bought a wedding gown and an associated undergarment
-perused various resources (read: Google) for potential ceremony readings and vows
-started a music list
-contacted musicians for the ceremony
-started an Under-No-Circumstances-Are-You-To-Play-These-Songs list
-succeeded in driving my fiancee crazy

Who the hell are YOU, The Knot, to tell me that I am underachieving?!?!? Screw you. I didn’t even check out your stupid forums because I just know what they’ll be like.

Now that I’ve untied my relationship with The Knot, I’d like to tell you about some awesome alternatives I’ve found.

-Hot Pink Petticoat – an event planning blog with some fun ideas
-Snippet & Ink – the best site ever with daily inspiration and weekly Real Weddings
-The Preppy Wedding – I admit, that I’m a little intimidated by the J.Crew crowd in a Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles sort of way, but I secretly like the clean preppiness of it all
-Vintage Glam Blog – cool vintage bridal inspirations
-OffBeat Bride – awesome tips and tricks and comments and ideas for your not-so-traditional, dance to “Butterfly Kisses” with your dad wedding

Enjoy! (and I promise that it won’t totally be wedding all the time!)

A Must Read

July 21, 2008 · 4 Comments

I came upon this article through another blog’s posting. They called it a “Tough Read.” I am calling it a must read. Every person who thought it was a good idea to invade a sovereign nation without provocation must read this. Every person in a position of authority who either lied to Americans or made decisions to facilitate an unjust war must read this. Every person who I hear say that PTSD is something that’s just “in the soldier’s head” or believes that the armed forces are open to the possibility of occurence and effective treatment of PTSD must read this.

If you are, however, like me, I don’t recommend reading this at work.

Etsy-licious

June 25, 2008 · 3 Comments

I’ve recently fallen in love with Etsy.com. If you haven’t heard of it, you should check it out RIGHT NOW! It’s a handcrafted lover’s paradise. After perusing the shops and many of the resources, I want to quit my job and work all day from home on pretty little embroidered/drawn/painted/lettered/sewn things and make oodles of money. That’s currently Alternative Life Plan #90 (give or take a few).

Since it’s not feasible that I’ll get there anytime soon, I’d like to share with you some of my favorite items listed (just three, for now, or I might not quit). Browse to your heart’s (or wallet’s) content.

  • The hand-embroidered PBR can card. Pure genius! Something I wish I’d found before Father’s Day, as I know my dad would love it. As the seller says, “Much more refreshing than the mail you usually send.”
  • Polka Dot Sunsuit, Reversible with Matching Bloomers. If I had a child, and that child was a girl, this would be her outfit for the entire summer. What is cuter than bloomers? Polka dot bloomers, I say!
  • Kentucky Map Pendant. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, but I like it. This pendant is really cool, but I love my state. The seller probably has your state, too.

Whirlwind Weekend

May 12, 2008 · 2 Comments

The weekend past was one of those where I feel like I never got to just sit down and relax. That’s not to say it wasn’t a lot of fun, but still…you know what I mean?

After work on Friday, The Boyfriend and I cleaned and cleaned, and then we cleaned some more. I went to the grocery and got the makings for the Fabulous Haw-Asian Dinner I was serving on Saturday. I did all the prep for that, showered, and fell into bed, immediately asleep, around 10 o’clock. I can’t even recall what I ate for dinner that night. Oh, yes. Frozen pizza.

Saturday was a wake-up-bright-and-early-with-anticipation day. We were going kayaking with some coworkers, and it was to be their first time on the water. Preparing two people for a day-long trip on the water is surprisingly more complicated than it sounds. I wonder if we take too much stuff with us. After finishing the prep for dinner, I helped The Boyfriend pack all of our gear and load the boats into the truck. Admittedly, he did a whole lot more of the work than I did.

On the trip, I got to test out some new gear:

  • A new gel seat, since my boat only has a plastic molded one. Thumbs up on the Skwoosh.
  • A new first aid kit. The last one was bought for camping at the Super Huge Discount Superstore of Evil and turned out to not be waterproof. This one is in a dry bag and will hopefully stand the test of my many capsizes. We didn’t need the first aid kit, which is a mystery but a good one.
  • A new waterproof (really, I mean it this time) bag for important things like my ID, my phone, and The Boyfriend’s camera (which we still double-bagged because we weren’t trusting of the waterproof claim). It really is waterproof. That bag rocks.
  • A locking carabiner, which was totally cool and useful for securing the bag mentioned above. I was worried that a regular carabiner might come undone, somehow and my important good s would be lost. I’m paranoid about losing my phone and afraid that The Boyfriend would seriously maim me for losing his camera, so I liked the locking aspect of this carabiner.
  • A paddle leash that proved to be worth the $16 price that I thought was pretty steep. Couldn’t I just make this thing? Probably not. It features a hook-and-eye strap on each end of a coiled length of cord. One strap attaches to your paddle, the other to your wrist or boat. I didn’t like it attached to my wrist, so I strapped it to my boat, and now, I don’t have to worry about a floating-off paddle.
  • A new paddle. It rocks my old paddle out of the water. The paddles are scooped, which allows the paddler to move more water with the same stroke. My old paddle sported flat ends and I wasn’t a fan. Good thing that one was free. Now, we have a spare paddle.
  • A Camelbak water bottle. PBA-free. I’m glad to find that out via the Camelbak website. I worried about the #7 recycle symbol because it was the same as the Nalgene bottles, which aren’t PBA-free. It’s easier to drink from than a Nalgene (since you don’t have to unscrew the lid). I also like the harder carrying loop it sports.
  • S-shaped, double opening carabiner. This was an awesome way to attach the water bottle to my seat gusset. I struggle with opening carabiners on the fly because I’m just challenged, that way. This one had two openings, so I could always get it quickly for a sip.

Good, Lord. That’s a lot of new gear. New for next week will be a pair of shorts that tries much harder to stay dry. Next challenge? Keeping water out of the bottom of my boat. Also (and how excited am I about this?) – new shoes! The water shoes I bought were cheapies. Frankly, they sucked. Yeah, they were fine to get wet, but they provided no cushion or structure against walking on the rocks and shore. I also blame them for the busted knee I got when I slipped on a rock. The new ones are fancy schmancy L.L. Beans and are a LOT like the expensive Keen’s I covet.

Ok, back on track with the weekend. After we kayaked about 12 miles, everyone headed back to be annoyed by our dogs, drink a couple of beers, and eat dinner. All parties were nearly falling asleep in their salads. As soon as our guests left and showers were taken, we were sleeping like babies.

The Boyfriend made pancakes, at my request, on Sunday morning. Even though I had to go to the store twice, dressed like a bum, under threat of severe weather, they were worth it. His pancakes are awesome. I went to my mom’s house to spend the day with her. She liked the gift, I think. We drove around the countryside, trying to find the Wildlife Sanctuary, but it was raining by the time we got there. No bird watching for us. Maybe another day. We did go watch some fish, though. We watched it go from the plates to our mouths, held by chopsticks. Sushi, baby! We ate until we were pleasantly stuffed, one more piece and we’d have been miserable. Then, it was back to her house to organize her scrapbooking equipment. She has a room that’s dedicated to that and toys. She’s got a TON of stuff. We didn’t make much headway, but we made some and sort of have a plan for the future. Dinner with the ‘rents and The Boyfriend rounded out the weekend.

This morning, back to the grind. I need another day of weekend!
